This course focuses on understanding the world of the traumatized child, including the abuse-focused clinical treatment process, and consideration of diverse forms of abuse (abusive family dynamics, physical and sexual abuse, and community violence, utilizing the helping relationship as a primary modality. A variety of relationship-based interventions are explored (Verbal and non-verbal), integrating neurobiological, developmental, cultural, and attachment perspectives, and informed by the Neurosequential model of treatment (NMT). Through lectures, experiential learning, case discussion, audio/visual maaterials, and writing, students will learn to understand abuse as it impacts children, techniques and strategies for intervening with clients, and contextual challenges to treatment, moderated by their experience of themselves as social workers.
