A letter from the SSA Alumni Association

April 7, 2020

Dear fellow SSA Alumni:

We hope this note finds you and your families well during this time of unprecedented uncertainty. All of us at SSA are deeply grateful for your outpouring of support over the past several weeks. As Dean Gorman-Smith discussed in her recent message, the University of Chicago, including SSA, has transitioned to remote learning for the spring quarter to ensure the health and safety of all our students, faculty, and staff.

During this challenging period, we are working diligently to support our broader SSA community. We know this pandemic impacts all of us in different ways, and that many of you are experiencing hardships as you work to support the most vulnerable during these uncertain times. Our thoughts are with each of you.

Many SSA friends and alumni have asked how they can support our students as they navigate this changing academic environment. While emergency funds to support students and their families are a top priority, here are other important ways you can help:

  • Support the SSA Fund—Over the next weeks and months, some students will have urgent financial needs as they transition off campus. From housing, food and basic necessities, technology support, and more, your gift to the SSA Fund gives us the flexibility to help students immediately and makes a direct impact on the most pressing student needs.
  • Join the Wisr Community—Wisr is an online platform that connects students and alumni for networking, informational interviews, and more. Join SSA’s Wisr page today to let students and alumni know that you are available to provide career advice and support. Now, when physical contact is so limited, these virtual connections are even more valuable.
  • Volunteer Virtually—Our Career Development Office, Admissions, Professional Development, and Alumni Relations teams are looking for alumni willing to participate in virtual learning or conduct virtual conversations with current and admitted students. Sign up today to get involved.
  • Share Your Story—We know that many of you are active in COVID-19 efforts around the world. If you have a story to share, please let us know. Upload a photo, video, or brief story to let us know what you are doing in your community to help others in need.

The SSA alumni community is responsible for so much of our success in advancing the important mission of the School, the field of social work and social welfare. We appreciate and are grateful for your continued expertise, ideas, and generosity.

Please be well, and do not hesitate to reach out to Drae Laws (andrae@uchicago.edu) with questions, concerns, or additional ways we can support you during this challenging time.

Thank you for all that you do for SSA.

Warmly,
