As the largest generation in American history ages, there is an urgent need for social workers trained in the special issues affecting older adults. This course will examine the forces which shape the evolution of both the perception and experience of aging in the 21st century. The course will consider the aging process from a variety of perspectives: physiological, sociocultural, and phenomenological. We will draw on multiple disciplines, including the arts, to present the diversity of the aging experience and to explore the manifold ways in which the dynamic interaction between the older person's social and physical environment affects quality of life. Finally, the course will address expanding opportunities for social workers in direct service, administration, and policy-making in service of America's older population.
