SSA Receives Champions for Recovery Award

A Safe Haven Foundation,  a social business enterprise that empowers families and individuals experiencing homelessness or crisis to achieve sustainable self-sufficiency, hosted the 2011 Champions for Recovery Awards on September 20th.  The Foundation honored Dean Neil Guterman, recognizing his and the School of Social Service Administration's efforts to aid Chicagoland's populations experiencing homelessness, poverty, and crisis.

Dean Neil Guterman received the Champions for Recovery award on behalf of the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration recognizing his and the school's Leadership in Academics.

"I am honored to accept the Champions for Recovery Award on behalf of the School of Social Service Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago," said Guterman. "SSA and A Safe Haven Foundation are joint partners with a common aim, and we are especially honored to be recognized for the research, education and expertise we provide here in Chicago and across the nation, so that effective services can help lift the lives of those struggling with addiction and homelessness."

Neli Vazquez-Rowland, president of A Safe Haven Foundation expressed her appreciation for the work of SSA, saying, "We are grateful for the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration's quality work, research, and support for Chicago's underprivileged families and communities. Together, I hope to collaborate on further initiatives to solve the issues of poverty and homelessness plaguing the Chicagoland communities."

The University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of social work. Neil Guterman is a nationally leading expert on child abuse and neglect and children's exposure to violence more broadly. He is the author of Stopping Child Maltreatment Before it Starts: Emerging Horizons in Early Home Visitation Services (2001), and co-editor of the forthcoming reference volume, Child Maltreatment Prevention.

The 2011 Champions for Recovery Luncheon hosted by A Safe Haven Foundation recognizes outstanding national leaders who act and advocate for recovery from homelessness and its associate issues of addiction and other crisis.
